Exposition "own work" Jan Anton Rijsdijk
from Port man to Painter

Date : 06th of juli - 24th august 2008

Opening hours : wednesday, saturday and sunday from 14.00 - 18.00 h

With the same passion as that which he used to tackle the fully loaded bulk vessels in former days in the Rotterdam port with his floating cranes, he now tackles the empty painter’s canvas with a brush and tubes of paint.
Jan Anton Rijsdijk, possibly the best stevedore ever known in the Rotterdam port, and for this reason sent away from the port with a pocket full of money by the port elite, has now rediscovered his characteristic dynamics in painting.

The port millionaire, who bought up a country estate with a dilapidated castle in Belgium, demolished it right down to the ground and rebuilt it stone by stone again into a magnificent country estate in Kempen in Belgium. He who transformed the riding school on this country estate into a giga-art gallery, has now taken up the painters’ palette himself. Over the past two years Rijskijk has been painting feverishly, resulting in his first 50 paintings. Work that certainly still cannot be placed in a certain box, but it gives a fascinating picture of what occupies the former port entrepreneur.

His nostalgia for the port and its striking cranes, his view on the world and people around us, laid down in about 50 colourful paintings which are very much worth the effort to take a look at. The artist Rijsdijk invites everybody, expert and layman alike to come and have a look at his work and to experience these works, so striking in their colour and form.

The Belgian and Dutch art world might have gained a new phenomenon here. The future will tell. It is in any case interesting for viewers, both those interested in art but also the layman, regarding the striking change in life of a former port baron and offering them the possibility to get to know a fascinating and passionate human being and (life-loving) artist. The coming 2 months, the doors of his art gallery are wide open to every interested person.....
